Echoes of Venice: A Piano Beyond Music

April 23, 2026 - Rudolf Zoltner

At the Milan Design Week, where design meets innovation, Fazioli once again demonstrated why it stands among the most visionary piano makers of our time. Taking center stage at the brand’s Milan showroom, the F212 Venetiacaptivated visitors not only with its sound, but with its narrative depth and visual richness.

Presented as part of the Fuorisalone program, the instrument was brought to life in a preview performance by pianist Alberto Ferro, whose refined playing underscored the piano’s expressive potential. Yet the real story lies beyond the keyboard.

A Piano as Narrative

The F212 Venetia is conceived as a “visual narrative”, transforming the piano into a canvas that evokes Venice not just as a location, but as an idea - an emblem of balance between art, ingenuity, and human values.

Along the side of the instrument unfolds a hand-painted panorama of the Grand Canal, a motif deeply rooted in art history. From Canaletto to Paul Signac, this iconic waterway has long symbolized the heart of Venice. Here, however, it takes on a new dimension - becoming part of a musical instrument, merging sound and image into a single artistic object.

The composition begins at the Rialto Bridge, not merely as a visual landmark, but as a metaphor. A bridge connects and so does a piano, linking composer, performer, and listener.

Symbols of Power—and Peace

The symbolism deepens on the piano lid, where the iconic Lion of Saint Mark appears, inspired by a Renaissance work by Vittore Carpaccio. The winged lion, resting on an open book bearing the inscription “Pax tibi Marce evangelista meus”, represents not dominance, but peace, stability, and quiet strength.

In a world often defined by tension, this message feels strikingly contemporary. The Venetia does not merely celebrate beauty, it suggests a vision of balance built on wisdom and dialogue.

Craftsmanship at Its Finest

The instrument’s extraordinary decoration was realized by the Florentine workshop Bianchi Dipinti, a family-run atelier with over a century of history. Their meticulous hand-painted techniques, rooted in Renaissance traditions, bring authenticity and depth to the piano’s aesthetic.

Together with Paolo Fazioli, the artisans revealed the creative process behind the instrument, one that combines engineering precision with artistic heritage.

A Continuing Story

The F212 Venetia also echoes an earlier milestone: the “Marco Polo” art-case piano, created 25 years ago, which explored the dialogue between East and West. With Venetia, Fazioli returns to its Venetian roots, offering a new chapter - one that speaks less of travel and more of reflection.

Beyond the Instrument

Ultimately, the F212 Venetia is not just a piano. Like Venice itself, it stands as a testament to what can be achieved when tradition, creativity, and vision converge.

In its layered symbolism and refined craftsmanship, it reminds us that music - and art - can still point toward something greater: a shared language of beauty, and perhaps, a quieter path toward peace.

A piano used by John Lennon to compose songs for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band has sold for a record £2.5 million ($3.2 million). The instrument, auctioned at Christie’s in New York, is believed to have achieved the highest price ever paid for Beatles memorabilia.
